These are the Best Rivers for Tubing Near Grand Rapids
It is going to be a very hot stretch across West Michigan this week, with temperatures climbing high well into the 90s.
That usually means heading for the water, finding some shade, or planning a low-effort summer day that keeps you out of the heat for a while. If tubing down a river is on your radar this week, we've got suggestions for you from the folks who know best: locals.

I’ve tubed plenty of times with friends, and it’s always a blast. We usually hit the Muskegon River in Newaygo, where you can rent tubes from Wisner Rents Canoes. They make it super easy with rentals and a shuttle so you can just enjoy the ride. It's the perfect summer escape!
We always tie our tubes together, toss a floating cooler in the middle, and drift for hours. It’s fun to chat with other tubers and wave at the kayakers and canoers as they pass. You’ll definitely want sunscreen, drinks, snacks, and maybe a waterproof speaker. I'd also recommend wearing water shoes!

And pro tip: check the weather before you go. I once got caught in a surprise downpour and let’s just say, floating in the rain is a lot less fun than it sounds. Also, be cool and clean up after yourselves. Nobody wants to float past your empty chip bags.
Lately, my friends and I have been thinking about switching it up and trying a new river. That’s how I ended up down a Reddit rabbit hole, where I found a bunch of great ideas. Like me, the person who began the conversation had only tubed the Muskegon River in Newaygo. People had lots of suggestions on other options, along with places to start and end your tubing trip.
