One of the worst parts of a Michigan winter is driving while dealing with the elements. Whether you're dealing with black ice, temperatures so cold salt doesn't work, or blinding snowfall, there's plenty to worry about while you're driving.

The ditch along M-6 East/West is constantly littered with cars that slid off the road whenever the weather is bad. I've never had the fortune of going into a ditch, but it can be scary and potentially life-threatening. Look For A Flag

When the weather is bad throughout West Michigan, law enforcement can become overwhelmed by calls and spread thin, so it can be helpful for them when civilians can inform them about car accidents. However, when lots of people call reporting the same crash or stranded vehicle over and over, it can actually be an inconvenience for law enforcement.

So, they do one simple thing to communicate to everyone that a car has been addressed by police: they put caution tape on the car. The Police Department says that the caution tape could be wrapped around the antenna, and a door handle, and "some of us even mummify the vehicle in the tape", making it very obvious the car has been serviced.

Sounds simple, but it communicates a lot.

  • It makes drivers aware the vehicle is there
  • It lets drivers know no one is in danger in the car.
  • Tells law enforcement the vehicle has been serviced.
