Michigan Runs On Dollar General, New Map Shows
If you've been to the grocery store recently, you've probably groaned looking at the price of eggs alone. Things are costing more and more these days, and that can lead to people shopping in other spots. Even before inflation was attacking your wallet, shopping at a store with "Dollar" in the title where everything costs a dollar(ish) felt like it shouldn't be allowed.
However, Dollar General, Dollar Tree, and Family Dollar seem to pop up like a weed. Dollar General alone opened 730 new locations, relocated 85 stores, and remodeled 1,620 stores in 2024 alone. All that to say: these stores are everywhere, but how many are in Michigan? One man over on Reddit has taken it upon himself to map them all out.

Dollar General Is Everywhere
Since it started in 1939, Dollar General's promise of delivering brand and products at affordable prices has been a winning business model for the company which now boasts over 20,000 stores in 48 states. These stores are particularly successful in small towns, as we'll see momentarily.

Reddit user Ok_Chef_8775 took the painstaking job of counting every Dollar General and plotting them on a map by county. What he found was quite shocking, with over 10 million Michiganders, or 99% of the state, living in a county with at least one Dollar General.

Wayne County (54 stores), Genesee County (31), and Kent County (30) have the most stores, which makes considering Wayne and Kent are the two highest populated cities in the state. Interestingly, Leelanau County is the only county in the entire state that Dollar General hasn't expanded to. This is especially surprising considering the county's proximity to Traverse City.
It is worth noting that all this information is based on 2023, so information on this map could have changed since then.
