Two things make a pizzeria stand out: fantastic sauce and a welcoming atmosphere. There are plenty of places that have one or the other, but there are few that manage to succeed in both areas. Hudsonville has been spoiled by Sara's Pizzaa pizzeria that has been family-owned and run since it opened in 1987.

Now, after nearly 40 years in business, Sara's Pizza is entering a new chapter after its owners announced they would be retiring, passing the torch to a new owner.

Sara's Pizza

Sara's Pizza has been run by Phyllis and Rick Verstrate and has been delivering exceptional Italian food since 1987. While pizza is in the name, Sara's menu ranges from submarine sandwiches, stromboli, and homemade Italian dinners like fettuccine alfredo and manicotti.

The "homemade" part of this business is what makes Sara's special. Family is at the core of this pizzeria. Outside of being family-owned for 40 years, the store's manager is Verstrate's daughter-in-law, the store closes on holidays to encourage quality time and hosts fun events like their heart-shaped pizzas on Valentine's Day.

In a post on Sara's Pizza's Facebook page, owners Phyllis and Rick Verstrate announced they would be retiring and passing on the torch to a new owner. Since family and community are such a crucial part of the business, the new owners have assured the community that "they will keep it [the business] just the way it is".
