The principle behind daylight saving time is to make better use of longer daylight in the summer and a little more light in winter mornings. So this Sunday at 3 a.m. you move your clock back to 2 a.m. losing an hour.

To gain the hour back and have more sunshine in your summer evenings on March 9, 2025, Michiganders will gain an hour by moving your clock from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. If you go to bars until close you will get an extra hour to party.

I have been moving clocks forward or back my whole life except when I lived in an area of Indiana that didn't change the time. I have to admit I liked not worrying about changing the clock and it worked for me during archery season for deer giving more evenings to hunt. What if daylight saving time went away altogether for Michigan?

The United States Senate has already passed a bill that would have Daylight Saving Time all year long but was never made into law so we are still stuck moving our clocks back in the fall and forward in the Spring. If the law gets passed, what would happen in Michigan?

According to WXYZ, below is a list of things that would affect Michigan if daylight-saving time was year-around and never changed:

  •  Summer would have later sunsets and a solid sunrise.
  •  Winter would get weird when sunrise would be between 8 and 9 a.m. This would have kids going to school or waiting for the bus in the dark.
  • Colder mornings would also mean ice would stay on the roads longer and cause more traffic accidents. Fog would last longer in the mornings.
  • Sleep Loss would be more severe.
  • Extra daylight in the winter would benefit those with seasonal affective disorder.
  • Extra daylight would increase opportunities for commerce and recreation.
  • You wouldn't have to change your clocks.

There are positives and negatives to staying on daylight savings time so we Michiganders will have to wait and see if that bill ever gets passed into law.
