Overcharged? Georgetown Township Fixing Water Bill Error for Residents
If you live in Georgetown Township, you might notice your next water bill looking a little lighter.
Township officials say residents will soon see a credit on their upcoming bills after a recent mistake caused some customers to pay higher water and sewer rates earlier than planned.
The new rates, approved back in June, were accidentally applied to some bills between April and mid-July, leading to higher-than-expected charges across the community.
On Monday night, the township board voted to do the right thing and fix that. The extra amount residents were charged will now be credited automatically on future bills. That means no paperwork or phone calls are required if you are eligible.
(No hoops and you get a refund? What a miracle, we love to see it!)
Plus, with the holidays on the way, that’s a nice surprise to save a little money on your bill. (Even if it's money you technically already spent. Just enjoy the girl math of it.)
The rate increase itself isn’t going away, though. It’s connected to rising wholesale water costs from Ottawa County and the City of Wyoming, which supply Georgetown’s system. People online have been complaining
Township leaders say they’re also reviewing ways to prevent similar issues in the future, including a potential tiered rate system that could charge heavier water users more.
For now, though, residents can look forward to a little credit heading their way later this month, and that’s something that’s sure to make opening the next water bill just a bit more enjoyable.
