Popular Restaurants In Michigan Are Changing How They Make Your Food

Steak 'n Shake, Popeyes, Outback Steakhouse, Sweetgreen, and Buffalo Wild Wings have already stopped using or plan to move away from cooking with seed oils.

What Is Beef Tallow?

According to the Mayo Clinic beef tallow is typically used for cooking at high temperatures such as deep frying and roasting.

"It’s made by removing, simmering and clarifying the fatty tissue that surrounds the organs of ruminant animals. Ruminant animals chew their cud and include cows, buffaloes, sheep, goats and deer," the clinic stated. "Beef tallow is commonly made from cows and is sometimes called 'beef drippings.'"

Tallow also has many nonfood uses and can be an ingredient in candles, soaps and topical skincare.

Back in January Steak 'n Shake shared on social media that by the end of February of 2025 all of their fries would be fried in beef tallow.

Along with the fries, onion rings and chicken tenders will also be made using beef tallow.

The change from seed oils to beef tallow is because of the health benefits compared to using seed oils.

What Items Will Now Be Prepared With Beef Tallow

The following food items will now be prepared using beef tallow at these restaurants.

Steak 'n Shake: Fries, onion rings, and chicken tenders.

Popeyes: Fries and chicken.

Outback Steakhouse: Wings, fried mushrooms, fried shrimp, coconut shrimp, and the Bloomin' Onion.

Sweetgreen: The salad chain switched from seed oils to extra virgin olive oil and avocado oil for roasting vegetables and proteins.

Buffalo Wild Wings: Will be using beef shortening made from beef fat to cook French fries, onion rings, mozzarella sticks, chicken tenders, and wings.

I've heard a lot of talk about beef tallow from watching videos online about how to BBQ and smoke meat.
