While it’s true that a 21 Savage is now part of the MSU hockey roster, it’s not the one who raps about bank accounts…

it’s Red Savage, who just happens to wear the number 21. The new Michigan State player’s name alone has sparked plenty of confusion online, but make no mistake, Red is here to make noise on the ice and not in the studio. (Although, we wouldn’t be mad if he dropped a fire track out of nowhere.)

The not so 21 Savage, is a transfer from Miami (Ohio) and brings some serious talent to the Spartans. He was a 2021 fourth-round pick for the Detroit Red Wings and has experience playing for Team USA at the World Juniors. In other words, while he might not be dropping verses, he’s definitely got the skills to drop pucks and opponents alike.

The mix-up has led to plenty of jokes online, with fans imagining the rapper trying to lace up skates or calling out plays in his signature monotone. But for Michigan State, the real 21 Savage—Red, that is—could be a game-changer as they chase down a championship run.

So, no, you won’t see one of the most famous rappers in the world on the ice at Munn Arena anytime soon, but with Red Savage rocking No. 21, Michigan State might have just found their new favorite playmaker. And hey, it’s kinda fun to yell “21, 21!” anytime he does well.
