Watch It! These 9 Foods are Banned in Michigan!
I think we're lucky that we live in a pretty good "foodie" state. We have a good food supply, and wonderful restaurants with fabulous chefs to visit.
For example, you can't forget the delicious Muskrat Casserole, made from the semi-aquatic rodent, it's topped with gravy and served with mashed potatoes. Yum??? It's real!
But there are actually some foods you won't find because they are banned in Michigan.
What about food brands like Frosted Flakes, Skittles, Mountain Dew, Gatorade, Coffee-Mate, Little Debbie Swiss Rolls, Stove-Top Stuffing, and more? THEY ARE BANNED! Yes they are, however, only in other countries. They are not banned in Michigan and the U.S. Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you.

But seriously folks, there are some foods banned in Michigan, as reported by sister station WKFR two years ago, and here they are.
9. Horse Meat
Technically, you can eat horse meat in the U.S. If a horse dies of natural causes, and you're right there, you can eat it. But because they're classed as an "amenable species," horse meat can't be sold or shipped without inspection.
8. Sassafras Oil
Safrole and oil of sassafras have been banned as a food additive by the FDA due to carcinogenic concerns.
7. Ackee
Most ackee products have been banned from import into the US due to concerns about poisoning from the unripe fruit.
6. Beluga Caviar
The beluga sturgeon is currently considered to be critically endangered, causing the United States Fish and Wildlife Service to ban in 2005 the importation of beluga caviar.
5. Haggis
Haggis is pretty disgusting and the national dish of Scotland. It is a savory pudding made with a mixture of sheep liver, heart, lungs, beef or mutton suet, oatmeal, and spices. It is put into a sheep's stomach and boiled before it is served. It was banned in the U.S. in 1971 because the USDA deemed animal lungs a foodborne illness risk.
4. Ortolan
The arguably barbaric preparation isn't why eating the bird is illegal. They are endangered with a decreasing population.
3. Japanese Puffer Fish
Also known as Fugu, many types of fugu are highly poisonous.
2. Casu Marzu
A maggot-infested sheep milk cheese is a revered delicacy on the Italian island of Sardinia. It's illegal to buy and sell in the U.S.
