This cold, Michigan weather has been a bit brutal hasn't it. And it has especially been brutal on our cars.

Have you had some mornings that your car, sitting out over night, just wouldn't start or cranked and cranked before it finally turned over? Many of us have.

HOW LONG SHOULD YOU RUN THE ENGING TO CHARGE THE BATTERY ?

Our sister station B105 reported that you Can Never Fully Charge Your Car Battery By Driving. Experts at Interstate Batteries explain that with modern cars, you'll never charge your battery completely to 100% by driving it. Because there are so many onboard computers and electronics in cars, the electrical system will actually protect the computers from being overcharged. They stop the charging short of 100% to protect the components.

The website Powering Solutions says it varies depending on the type of battery you have, and the temperature.

"In general, it’s best to let your car warm up for at least 30 minutes before starting it if the temperature is below freezing. This gives the engine time to warm up and prevents the battery from being overworked. If you have an older car with a lead-acid battery, you may need to let it run for up to an hour before it’s fully charged. Newer cars with maintenance-free batteries typically only need about 15 minutes of running time to charge the battery."

Interstate Batteries went on to say though that letting your car idle will not charge your battery because it is powering all the electronics. You would have to drive at highway speeds to charge it properly.

HOW FAR WOULD YOU HAVE TO DRIVE TO CHARGE?

FAR!

Let's say your car needed a jump to start. Then it would take about 520 miles on the highway to fully charge your battery. Yikes!
