It is a sign of the times as businesses are consolidating and shutting down operations in several locations, and banks are not immune to closing branches and downsizing.

Flagstar Bank has announced they will be closing six Michigan locations and one is here in Grand Rapids!

Actually, Flagstar has said that they will be closing 60 bank branches across the United States according to Yahoo!Finance, as part of a sweeping cost-reduction strategy aimed at streamlining operations.

I think we could all see this coming as our banking habits have changed over the years in a big way. Online banking is huge. You don't even have to visit the bank to deposit a check. Just do it on your phone.

ATM's are everywhere, so there is not a need to go into your local bank branch as before. Besides, if you do drive or walk over to your local branch, it is probably simply to use the ATM.

Will these closures hurt customers?

Sure they will. Without a convenient bank branch nearby it certainly will make banking a bit tougher for many people. After all, it was always nice to bank at the same location, get to know the tellers and managers, and develop a personal relationship.

Sadly, that is slowly going away. I guess we'll all have to adjust to doing our banking by talking with Zelle!
