Question? Can You Give Your Mail Carrier a Christmas Gift?
I wrote about this a couple of years ago but thought it would be a good reminder of the dos and don'ts of gifting your mail carrier this holiday.
As many of us are doing our Christmas shopping with gifts for all, don't forget your letter carrier, mailman, mailperson. They work hard through rain, sleet, snow or hail, and are there for you. They are working extra hours to make sure you get all your mail, gifts, etc.
So, leaving a little gift of thanks in your mailbox for them would be a great thing to do.
But, you better watch out, because there are some rules and guidelines you need to be aware of.
Your mailperson is a federal employee, and their jobs fall under the Executive Branch of the United States government. so they have to follow the ethics guideline of that branch of government.
Boiling it down, here are the main rules according to the website thoughtco.com:
1. "They cannot accepts cash and cash equivalents, such as checks or gift cards that can be exchanged for cash."
2. "Carriers are permitted to accept a gift worth $20 or less from a customer per occasion, such as Christmas."
3. "They cannot accepts gifts that may add up to more than $50 in any calendar year."
You might consider a simple holiday card of thanks. They will appreciate that.
On the other hand, if you really want to give them a gift, then consider:
WARM GLOVES
A WARM SCARF
HAND WARMERS
I've given restaurant gift cards before because you can't exchange them for cash.
How about some Christmas cookies?
