My wife and I, along with 31 of our 100.5 River listeners, are headed to Alaska for our fabulous Alaskan adventure and we all are very excited.

One of the things we are looking forward to is going on a whale watch hoping to catch glimpses of whales.

Okay, here in Michigan, we don't have whales in the Great Lakes, however, we should see lots of other wildlife in Alaska, bear, deer and moose. Ahh, that majestic animal, the moose.

But that is Alaska, so what about Michigan? Do we have any moose here?

Yes we do and they are pretty much in the Upper Peninsula.

Welcome to the Michigan Capitol of Michigan, Newberry!

The Newberry website says that being located in the heart of the Upper Peninsula, you will see more moose in the Luce County area that any other spot in Michigan.

Newberry says that most sightings do occur in the Tahquamenon State Park and north of Newberry. The area and terrain is a perfect setting for the lifestyle of the moose.

Moose are native to the Upper Peninsula, and used to roam the northers areas of Michigan, but for whatever reasons became nearly extinct until in 1985. The DNR air-lifted 59 moose from Canada, Ontario, and released them, Exploring the North website says.

They went on to say the latest DNR survey reported about 325 moose happily residing, breeding and grazing in the Western UP, so there now is a good chance for an exciting moose sighting!

And the good news, you don't have to go to Alaska to see a moose!
