Monday, December 29th was not one of Michigan's and Grand Rapids' better weather days. High winds, blowing snow, near whiteout conditions in some areas, and very bad, slick, roads.

There were many, many accidents, including the one that has closed part of an expressway for some time.

Kathryn Havrilla of Fox17, gave us the lowdown on what happened and what led to the northbound lanes of I-196 near Old Allegan Road in Allegan County's Saugatuck Township being closed.

A semi lost control about 7 a.m. Monday morning, December 29, while driving north on I-196 near Saugatuck.  That had to be terrifying for the driver as he approached the overpass of Old Allegan Road. He lost control on the highway and crashed off the expressway overpass down onto Old Allegan Road. Oh boy, that's not good!

It took a bit of time for emergency crews to arrive. When they got there, fortunately, the driver was able to get out of the truck and escape the fire as the truck burst into flames. The driver was injured, but the Allegan County Sheriff's Department reports he has non-life-threating injuries while he recovers in the hospital.

You sure can't say the same for I-196 northbound and Old Allegan Road, because Allegan County Emergency Management and MDOT has had to close the roads.

There was a lot of debris, and it needed to be removed so the Michigan Department of Transportation can inspect the bridge.

The northbound lanes of the expressway, I-196, will be closed "for some time," and they are not sure when they will be able to reopen them.

The good news? The southbound lanes are open!
