Perhaps we're biased but there are few states with a citizenry as prideful of their home as Michiganders are for the Upper and Lower Peninsulas. One could even say it's baked into the very core of those born in Michigan.

Do we have a certain 'Michigan DNA' in our veins?

The question came up recently on Reddit with someone asking about Michiganders Michigan-ness:

I moved to Missouri about 6 months ago and I have to laugh at the amount of people who compare us to Texans in terms of state pride. I've personally acquired the nickname Mr. Michigan because I apparently find a way or reason to mention Michigan and/or Detroit in what I'm jokingly told is just about every conversation. We really do come from one a heck of a great state.

Many commenters, particularly those who have moved away from Michigan shared anecdotes about experiences outside of Michigan.

A California transplant experienced a visceral reaction to advice to purchase a Subaru explaining it's still in their DNA to only 'Buy American." With the presence of the "Big 3" automakers in Detroit and well known stories of foreign made cars not welcome in parking lots in the region, it's a difficult for native Detroiters to give over.

Many Michiganders wear their state pride on their cars. Count how many cars have a sticker with the outline of the state, a single peninsula or the entire Great Lakes on the back.

Is it only Texas that shares the state pride as great as Michigan. And if so, is Michigan the Texas of the north? Or is Texas the Michigan of the south? What defines the Texas pride? It is the state was once its own nation? If that's the case, could Michigan make it on its own as an independent country?

Michigan DNA or whatever it is, Michiganders have it and residents of most other states just don't.
