Michigan State is set to soar in the 2025 Big 10 Basketball tournament. But there's something just under the surface of the school's football program that may leave Spartan fans scratching their heads.
There is a current Division III football team that possesses more Big 10 Football Championships than Michigan State.

That school - the University of Chicago.

Not just Michigan State with this 5 outright Big 10 championships compared to 6 for Chicago. But the Big 10 founding members has more outright conference championships than Iowa (4), Northwestern (2), Purdue (1), Penn State (2) and Indiana (1).
The school disbanded the football team in 1939 as they shifted a focus to academics. As fans shared on social media, the team's impact on the college game is lasting:
They are a huge reason why Maroon is a major team color in college football. In the early era, new teams would pick the colors of national powers, and Amos Alonzo Stagg’s Chicago teams were a force to be reckoned with. Virginia Tech still refers to their Maroon as “Chicago Maroon.”
As well as on the pro game where the Chicago Bears took the 'C' logo and the term "Monsters of the Midway" while the Arizona (née) St Louis (née) Chicago Cardinals:
took their name from the red uniforms they bought from the Chicago Maroons (I guess they figured cardinal and maroon were close enough!).
