Weather forecasters have already warned for a January that could bring a significant cold snap to Michigan. The meteorologists behind the Midwest Weather Facebook page say there is a likelihood of big snows Thursday January 2-Saturday January 4.

The hardest hit areas are forecast to be two spots in the Upper Peninsula - the Western UP south of the Keweenaw and the same region that saw the big snows in December around Munising, Tahquamenon Falls and the Seney Stretch.

Both of those regions could see a foot for more of snow from this event.

There is also the potential for up to a foot of snow in two areas of the Lower Peninsula. One centered around Traverse City and another along the immediate lakeshore from roughly Muskegon to Benton Harbor.

Those are the projections from the Midwest Weather Facebook page. From the National Weather Service, they have more modest accumulation totals with 1 to 8 inches in the Western UP with a Winter Weather Advisory in effect and an advisory in the Eastern UP for 6 to 14 inches north of M-28.

A Winter Weather Advisory has also been issued for the counties along the Lake Michigan shoreline through the day Friday from roughly Manistee to Hagar Shores.
