Leo’s with Liquor: Michigan Coney Spots Pouring Drinks
Coney Island is such a Michigan thing that if you're not from here, you simply wouldn't understand our peculiar obsession with the Coney Dog and the affordable food. (If you don't get it, stop trying, I don't think anyone can actually explain that to you).
Why Some Leo’s Serve Alcohol
While, traditionally, you cannot get alcohol at many Leo's Coney Island Locations, there are three locations here in the state that you actually can get and purchase alcohol from... which is such a weird concept to me.
We're not just talking tap beer either; it is cocktails and more with your coney and chili fries. There is one at the airport, but we won't talk about that one.
Grand Rapids: Leo’s On Tap at Studio Park
Grand Rapids is home to one of these locations at the Leo's Coney Island "On Tap" at Studio Park. It feels like someone handed you your favorite late-night spot a grown-up bar key. Sure, you can still crush a classic Detroit-style coney dog, but now you can stack it up with a pint or a proper mixed drink.
It works embarrassingly well, I must say.
Burgers, gyros, and a plate of wet fries, and bam! That beer is a part of the new tradition that you just made.
Sterling Heights: Full-License Leo’s
On the east side of the state, you can find another version of this restaurant in Sterling Heights. The Van Dyke Loe's runs with a full license, which means that you can pair a Greek salad and chicken lemon rice soup with something stronger than Coke. It's a similar menu that you know and love, but with a Michigan spin to it.
Why the Airport Leo’s Doesn’t Count
Now, about the Detroit Metro (DTW). Technically, yes, there is alcohol at the airport, Leo's. But airports are their own beast. You shouldn't buy a boarding pass to sip a beer. Airport drinks are a survival tactic, and you can basically get them anywhere.
Turns out a Coney Dog and a draft can upgrade your dining experience.
