Lake Superior State University’s Hilarious Banished Words List For 2025
Every state has its quirks, and Michigan is no exception.
While the Mitten State is known for its stunning landscapes and rich cultural history, some words and phrases Michiganders use could benefit from retirement.
Whether overused, misused, or just plain cringeworthy, a Michigan university has a few contenders for the "banned" list.

A Word I Believe Should Be Banned
Before we discover the list of banished words from a university, I wanted to share my word that I would love to be sent to a permanent slumber.
As for my list, "Pop" has to be added. As an East Coaster originally, it is always slightly unsettling to hear the word 'pop' when referring to soda.
It’s time to end the soda vs. pop debate. While “pop” is a point of regional pride, the argument has grown stale.
Call it what you want—just don’t argue with me about it anymore.
Lake Superior State University & Banned Words
Lake Superior State University's quirky tradition of releasing a Banished Words List "dates back to 1976."
The university gathered banished word submissions from all over the world, including Canada, Australia, Denmark, Germany, India, South Africa, and the United States, of course.
Whether the words have "overstayed its welcome" or it is simply unnecessary, some of your favorite words could be on this list.
- Cringe
- Game Changer
- Era
- Dropped
- IYKYK (If You Know, You Know)
- Sorry Not Sorry
- Skibidi
- 100%
- Utilize
- Period
I agree with a few of these words being 'lost' for the rest of time. As for 'skibidi,' I will never under why the younger generation created this slang term so I can live without it.
As for the word 'era,' I agree with Leah from Holland, Michigan. "Unless you are Taylor Swift, it might be time to leave "era" behind."
If Taylor Swift can let go of 'era,' I think we can too.
